GMPS 2016 Gender aware

Gender-aware media practice – GMPS

Whose news, whose views?
Gender and Media Progress Study 2015
Chapter 8
Southern Africa, 2016

Product Description

Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) remains a contentious issue in SADC and in Africa at large. Strict legislation, and in some instances merely socially accepted norms that act against realisation of diverse SOGIs, have been promulgated to curb this so-called “un-African” trait. Some countries in the SADC region openly oppose acknowledging and addressing issues of diverse sexual orientation. Zimbabwe and Zambia remain the most resistant, whilst Botswana, Mauritius, Namibia and South Africa rate amongst the most accommodating.
