Botswana: Chobe District Council ensuring that women own land

Chobe District Council was recently allocated 600 plots. A total of 4000 applicants applied and qualified for land allocation. The Chobe District Council developed resolutions to control the transfers of land, prioritising allocations to women who had lost their spouses or had lost their inheritance due to customary practices.

The Botswana 2013 Gender Protocol Barometer is the fifth annual tracking report of the country’s performance against the 28 targets of the SGP set for 2015. Botswana Council of NGOs (BOCONGO) in its capacity as country focal network of the Southern Africa Gender Protocol Alliance, led the research effort and will disseminate the findings of the report.

Botswana: BOCONGO develops advocacy strategy for signing of Protocol

The Botswana Council of NGOs (BOCONGO) has developed a strategy paper that it will use with assistance from the regional secretariat to push Botswana lawmakers to sign the SADC Protocol. The regional secretariat will assist in this process. BOCONGO serves as the Alliance national focal network. The strategy aims to ensure Botswana signs by 2013.

Draft Strategy Paper: Signing of the SADC Gender Protocol

This paper sets out a rationale for Botswana signing the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development. It is based on a consultative meeting co-convened by BOCONGO, as the national focal network of the Southern Africa Gender Protocol Alliance and Gender Links as the overall coordinator of the Alliance. The meeting took place on 14 March 2012, and led to the establishment of a task team that will take the process forward.
