Emma Kaliya is a Human Rights, Gender/Women rights Activist. The past 25 years, she has worked in several portfolios, which include: Programme Manager with Malawi Human Rights Resource centre and before worked with the Danish Centre for Human Rights, Africare, Finnish Refugee Council, MSF-France, Population services International, International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Emma holds the following positions at National and Regional level: Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of NGO Gender Coordination Network in Malawi, Trustee of the Media Institute of Southern Africa-Malawi Chapter, Chairperson of the Malawi Country Advisory Committee of the Southern Africa Aids Trust (SAT), Board Member, Partners In Hope Medical Centre-Lilongwe, Board Member of Malawi Electoral Support Network, Board Member – CONGOMA Governing Council, Think Tank- SADC Alliance (SADC Protocol on Gender and Development) and Barometer Researcher (2010-2013) Chairperson – The African Women’s Development and Communications Network (FEMNET) and she is also a Member of the Country Advisory Committee of UN Women
Emma strongly believes that, societal change is about empowering the grassroots especially women, to take up new challenges as leaders in their own right. Therefore, it has remained her conviction that there is need to continue applying the principal of helping people to help themselves. Communities must own processes and be able to appreciate their own participation as change agents.
