The CSW Beijing Plus Fifteen Review conference (1-8 March 2010), was an opportunity to combine reflection on progress and challenges over the last fifteen years since the Beijing Platform for Action, with the opportunity to share ideas and experiences on ways forward among gender and women’s activists from around the globe.
A team comprising Gender Links, the Gender, Media Southern Africa (GEMSA) Network, and the Nairobi-based African Woman and Child Feature Service (AWC) attended the event to undertake several activities. The purpose was to bring the voices of gender activists unable to attend the CSW, especially from Africa, to the conference; share news and debates from the proceedings; and inform media about emerging issues. This included hosting “cyber dialogues” and related face-to-face discussions, producing a daily conference newspaper titled “Daily Links@CSW,” producing a series of opinion pieces related to the event for distribution to media, and engaging in networking and relationship building. All of the participating organisations are part of the Gender and Media Diversity Centre (GMDC), a virtual and physical resource centre managed by Gender Links that aims to “connect, collect and collaborate” on issues of gender and the media.
