 Trainer’s Notes

  • This story is based on the results of a survey carried out by Deloitte on 110 firms, and which found that programmes aimed at managing AIDS in the workplace are poorly developed with no coordinated business response to the pandemic.  The article is written entirely from the perspective of employers. No People Living with AIDS are interviewed. It may therefore be regarded as HIV blind and lacks a human face.
  • The article does not provide gender-specific statistics for the sectors referred to in the article.  The opportunity to mainstream gender – especially where figures are quoted with regard to industries which have been hardest hit – is an unfortunate oversight.
  • All the sources in the article are men.

 Training Exercises

  • Interview PLWA on their views of work places disclosing the impact of the pandemic on work places.
  • Get participants to do exercises on the percentage of the gainfully employed men and women, and in which sectors.
  • Conduct interviews on the gendered impact of HIV/AIDS on the work place.
