Trainer’s notes
This is a good example of how household budgets can be used to demonstrate the ways in which poor people, and women, struggle to make ends meet. The example should also be used to draw out the factors that limit the agency of women, eg low levels of education, the burden of child care, not being able to get a job, and to think through policy measures that would help to make a difference.

Some training exercises
Using the figures in the story, participants could be asked to construct a monthly budget for the family, and to recommend a reasonable amount for the father of the children to pay towards their maintenance.
