Gender Links and Botswana Association of Local Authorities (BALA) last month organised a workshop for 35 members of the community in the township of Jwaneng as a follow up to the work on gender and local government.
The workshop aimed to raise community awareness on theSADC Protocol on Gender and Development main targets to reduce by half current levels of gender based violence by 2015.
“We educated them about the types of violence such as physical abuse, emotional abuse, incest and defilement. We used the opportunity toinformparticipants about organisations providing services on gender based violence,” said Keabonye Ntsabane, Gender Links’ Botswana Country Manager.
The workshop was very informative as members of the community were able to share with the facilitators about the types of violence they face in the community. One of the challenges faced in the community is the issue of grown up men who defile and impregnate young girls who are still students at junior schools. They also raised the point that when it comes to the work place male companions usually want to trade sexual favours for employment and promotions.
