Gender Based Violence Indicators Project

Gauteng
We are currently finalising the compilation of the GBV Indicators Gauteng report which will be launched on 28 March during the Gender Justice Summit in Johannesburg. Efforts to obtain more administration data were fruitful as we received data from Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development and Lifeline.

A fact-finding meeting was held with Alison Wainwright of Gauteng Community Safety Department and Myrtle Morris from Department of Social Development. The discussion yielded a wealth of data which will go a long way in describing GBV support and prevention at the Gauteng provincial level

Preliminary results were shared with a group of representatives from 13 SADC countries during a presentation at the GL National Action Plan meeting held in Johannesburg on 17 February 2011. Participants included representatives from relevant gender ministries from 13 of the 15 SADC states as well as leading NGOs working on GBV in each of the SADC member states. There was positive feedback from some South African NGOs and government representatives who committed to assisting in obtaining key outstanding data. One major recommendation was a need for a more robust analysis of political will to address GBV other than merely relying on speeches and the utterances as reported in the media. The meeting also provided opportunity to explore possibilities of replicating the study in other SADC countries.

Other provinces of South Africa
A tender advert to conduct the prevalence and attitudes survey was recently released. We have received overwhelming response and interest and 15 applicants submitted their proposals, which we are currently assessing. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted and requested to make presentations at our Johannesburg offices.

A consultative meeting will be held with the Limpopo government steering committee on 25 February 2011. The aim of the meeting is to obtain political buy-in and forge partnerships in preparation for GBV research in the province.

Botswana
The satellite office continues to solicit “I” Stories from different locations in the country. Data entry for political discourse analysis has commenced.

Mauritius
Data entry for political discourse analysis has commenced and plans are underway to commission consultants to solicit “I” stories.
