Murewa is situated, 75 kilometres northeast from the capital of Harare. Murewa Centre is the business hub of the inhabitants through their close proximity to Harare means they also render services to the capital, particularly vegetables. The Local authority is quite unique as it is one of a very few which has a stakeholder coordinated gender committee in place. Murehwa is a hub council. It has improved it’s gender mainstreaming initiatives by adopting a gender policy. Read the council’s 2019 institutional case study here. The council also did a verification exercise to assess their progress. The council is a hub council for Mashonaland East province rural councils in the Hub and Spoke programme for gender mainstreaming in Zimbabwe. Murewa RDC is also part of the sunrise campaign. 19 beneficiaries of the programme have benefitted from the Sunrise business revival programme. The council has developed a COVID19 response plan and is raising awareness of the virus in the community.

The council was rated the best rural hub council at the 2020 local government SADCProtocol@Work summit and 2021 regional SADCProtocol@Work summit.
