To celebrate South Africa’s 20th anniversary of freedom and democracy, CIVICUS and its partners will gather change makers from around the world at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg for International Civil Society Week from 19-25 November 2014.
International Civil Society Week 2014 will involve a diverse, multi-stakeholder partnership that seeks to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges. Under the banner of Citizen Action, People Power, the weeklong series events will be the premiere global gathering of inspired thinkers, innovation leaders and influential organisations.
The SADC Gender Alliance will be hosting a side event on the Role of Women Leadership in Civil Society. The event will highlight how women leadership is leading the conversations on a strong post-2015 gender agenda for Southern Africa .The event will have presentations and an open debate.
The panel for the event will be led by CIVICUS board members including Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda of World Young Women Christian Association (WYCA), Joanna Maycock from the European Women’s Lobby (EWL), Gender Links, Theo Sowa from The African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), Sisonke Msimang from Sonke Gender Justice and Kelly Case and Farah Council from the Institute for Inclusive Security in South Sudan and Sudan. Joanna Kerr (former AAI now with Greenpeace) will also be part of the event.
