International Women’s Day (8 March) is a global day to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.

* This year marks the centenary (100th year) anniversary of International Women’s Day.
* The event was first celebrated in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March to demand better pay, voting rights and shorter working day for women.
* The day was later moved to 8 March following International Discussions in 1913.
* The United States has designated the whole month of March as Women’s History Month.
* The United Nations began observing International Women’s Day in 1975, which was also International Women’s Year.
