This year marks 100 years of International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on 8 March. The 2011 United Nations (UN) theme for IWD is Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women. Gender Links’ (GL) theme for this year’s IWD is Decent work, Decent lives: 100 years of herstory.
In line with the UN theme, GL and partners will be hosting an exhibition and seminar profiling women from within the informal sector and those who provide care to those affected and infected by HIV and AIDS. The work of women in these sectors is often unrecognised as they operate outside the mainstream economy. Informal traders and care givers will share stories of their struggle to be recognised for their decent work.
