Political parties in Lesotho have called on the country’s electoral body to postpone local government elections due to logistical problems.
The call was made just a week before the Senate passed a new law that allows MPs and political parties to sue if they feel the IEC has wrongly allocated parliamentary seats.
Under the same law women are free to stand for the contested seats as well as benefit from seats reserved exclusively for women.
Women and Law in Southern Africa Lesotho office head Libakiso Mathlalo said her organisation is comfortable with the changes.
“We support the system fully and we are urging women to stand and compete in the local government elections,” she said.
