Malawi: Water Scarcity Increasing Gender Imbalance in Mulanje

Mulanje – The Mulanje Chapter of the Adventists Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Malawi says access to clean safe water is one issue that needs serious consideration as it increases gender imbalance and unfairness on access to the right to economic development.

Programmes Officer for ADRA in Mulanje, Andiyesa Muhango said this on the launch of a Swedish funded project which has a target of drilling boreholes for thousands of households in the area of Senior Chief Chikumbu in the district.

Muhango said looking at it from a developmental perspective, scarcity of clean safe water systematically puts women and girls in the area behind, as their participation in developmental activities is highly affected by long hours that they spend fetching water from far clean and safe sources each day.
