Strategies on increasing women’s participation in the post-2015 Development agenda

Participants who attended the fourth regional conference for African women in political leadership underscored the need to make recommendations for increasing women’s representation in political leadership to the United Nations, which is currently holding national, global and thematic consultations on what the next development framework after 2015 should address. The framework is set to succeed the current Millennium Development Goals, which are set to expire in 2015.

The Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 3 on promoting gender equality and empowering women includes an indicator on the proportion of women in national parliaments. However if governments fail to provide an enabling environment for such an increase to happen, reaching gender parity will remain a distant dream for the African continent.

FEMNET convened the conference in Lilongwe from November 26-28, 2012 which brought together seasoned women politicians as well as political aspirants from countries holding elections in 2012-2015, leading women’s rights activists, civil society and research organisations engaged in women’s leadership development, and key development partners who support women’s political participation initiatives. Special efforts will also be made to ensure participation of young women political leaders and aspirants to foster intergenerational dialogue and networking.

FEMNET believes that through strategic networking, mentorship, peer learning, exposure, appropriate support mechanisms and enhanced linkages and collaboration between women in politics and leaders in the African women’s movement, the African women’s rights agenda for peace, gender equality and development can be achieved.

A report on the outcomes of the conference will be circulated as soon as it is published.

Fantastic summary of the activities that took place in the last quarter of 2012 that have a promise of making a difference on the ground in the struggle against GBV and in increasing women’s participation in politics at both political party and government levels.
