The second annual Gender Justice and Local Government Summit and Awards, convened by Gender Links, were held in Johannesburg from 28-30 March 2011. Read more for full details of the 2011 Summit and Awards.
The Summit, among other objectives, provided a platform to debate on local government approaches to preventing gender violence in local communities; affirmed the progress made through the first Local Government Summit and Awards that attracted over 100 entries from across the SADC region; provided opportunity for local government practitioners and stakeholder to develop strategic partnerships and networking opportunities. The Summit further afforded all stakeholders the opportunity to interact and present content of what they understood the role of local authorities to be, as well as to showcase the good practices by councils of institutionalising gender mainstreaming with councils and the community at large.
The brought together 265 representatives for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) including local government authorities, gender ministries, mayors, and deputy mayors, civil society, journalists from throughout the region. It also attracted many younger women and men.
