South Africa Women in Dialogue (SAWID) has officially taken on the role of Alliance focal network. The Secretariat made the announcement after the SAWID National Council approved the proposal during its membership meeting and convened under the banner South African women as champions of change that among other deliverables sought to draft an action plan for the African Women’s Decade.

The meeting dedicated one of the sessions to the need for civil society coordination as a pillar. This under scored the need for all stakeholders to work together for achieving gender equality and dedicated part of this session a briefing on the regional Alliance institutional mechanisms and how this could work at national level.

Four other themes came under focus:
– Civil society approaches to eradicating poverty
– Civil society approaches to reducing violence against women and children
– Civil society approaches to early childhood development
– Commitments to Civil Society Action 2012-2020

By the end of the meeting, participants had drafted a national programme of action for the African Women’s Decade.
