Seychelles takes the lead…

“We must unite. Violence against women cannot be tolerated, in any form, in any context, in any circumstance, by any political leader or by any government” – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

There are only four years to go before the 2015 deadline to meet extensive GBV targets in the SADC Gender Protocol including the target to reduce current levels of GBV by 50%, Seychelles has a strong GBV National Plan, and has made remarkable progress over the year, not just in having a National Plan to end GBV, but one that is aligned to the SADC Gender and Development Protocol, and has budget allocations.

  • 2008: SDD launched the National Strategy on Domestic Violence 2008-2012.
  • April 2010: SDD led the development of the costed National Plan of Action on GBV 2010-2011, with support from UNIFEM.
  • December 2010: SDD launched the:
    Multi-sectoral GBV working group
UNiTE for Peace: End GBV campaign – local component of regional and international UNiTE campaigns.

– The Gender Secretariat has successfully secured a limited budget for implementation in 2011.
– Significant additional financial and technical support is needed to achieved planned targets.
