Alcohol abuse and transactional sex because of economic hardships are believed to be some of the factors that have led to an increase of gender based violence.
Statistics indicate that domestic violence is a major problem in Zimbabwe with a total of 3,141 domestic violence cases already reported in the first quarter of 2012. Government in 2007 set up the Anti-Domestic Violence Council. Even more alarming is that headline findings of the GBV indicators project rolled out in Zimbabwe show that at least 69% of women have experienced some form of violence in their life-time. Stakeholders are still compiling the full report.
The GBV indicators is inspired by the SADC Protocol’s target of reducing current levels of GBV by half by 2015 and the lack of comprehensive baseline datato assess progress. The Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development is working closely with Gender Links to roll out the project.
