The Mabutsane Sub Council is located in Mabutsane village, Botswana. The distance from Mabutsane to Botswana’s capital Gaborone is approximately 238km / 148 mi (as the crow flies).Mabutsane has population of 3000. It joined the COE in 2010.

The council has put in place a number of gender-related policies to guide its work. The district council consist of 6 male councillors and 2 female councillors. The council aims to expand its percentage of female councillors from 25%. The Mayor, as well as the Deputy Mayor of the council are males.

The council is made up of 10 committees, two of which are chaired by woman. There are more women employed than men in their Workforce of the council.

Young people, people living with disabilities (PWD) and community members participate in community-based planning projects and meetings. Between 51 and 75 percent, women participate in public consultations.

The total workforce of the council employees consist of 53 percent women, 19 percent youth and one percent people with disabilities. Women are only 16 of management. The accounting and revenue officers are women. The Council amended the recruitment, selection and promotion policies to increase the proportion of women in the workforce. In Mabutsane Sub district women are also found in non-traditional areas of decision making. They too are occupying high positions of leadership compared to the past

There are provisions for maternity leave but none for paternity leave. The council does have a sexual harassment policy. Cases related to Sexual harassment are usually reported whenever  they occurs. They are conducted by the Disciplinary Hearing Committee established within the council.

The Mabutsane Sub Council allocates a substantial budget to gender-related projects, these amounts have increased from 2015 to 2016.

As part of the of the Council’s local economic development plan, The Council has came up with the strategy of Culture day, through which Women, PWD, Men and Youth has been awarded a platform to market their products. 119 women has been funded through Poverty Eradication Programme and 38 Men. There are 280 beneficiaries benefiting from jobs created by the council, 147 women and 133 men.

Women, men, PWD, and youth are involved in the planning, management, and maintenance of water and sanitation. There is a total of 8 water and sanitation committees. There is 2 women and 6 men on the committees, one of which is chaired by a woman.
