In pursuit of sustaining the Gender Agenda, Kadoma City Council has religiously commemorated the international Women ’s Day. Commemorating the international Women ’s Day provides a platform for women to show case their achievements over the year and in past elections. It is a day to talk and celebrate women issues as well as providing an opportunity to lobby policy makers in the advancement of Women issues. City of Kadoma religiously observes this day annually like a birth day and this year it was held at Rimuka Stadium with a diverse attendance which included inter alia, church organizations, school children, politicians, youths, Junior Council for City of Kadoma, Government departments representatives, council officials and Councillors. The focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation, and love towards women to a celebration for women ’s economic, political and social achievements.
Activities on the day included the Main speech from the First Lady of Zimbabwe read on her behalf by the Honourable Member of the House of Assembly Julian Tsogorani (Women ’s Quota) plus other solidarity speeches from various members of Society and Government departments. Poetry, Drama and traditional dances spiced up the day ’s proceedings.
The day was celebrated under the theme: “Beijing+20: the Journey towards women empowerment in Zimbabwe: Successes and Challenges. ” The First Lady ’s Speech urged women to actively participate in science, engineering and mathematics and break gender stereotypes by venturing into non-traditional careers. The theme of this year resonates with Millennium Development Goal Number 3, which says, “Promote Gender equality and empower women. ”
