Brief description of the item of work you submitted and motivation of why it is a good example of gender in media content – 300 words
Radio Turf has broadcasted an item after we have attended Gender Links Workshop in Polokwane regarding the situation in Mankweng and surrounding areas on sexual harassment . The report was based on the awareness to eradicate gender abuse in the nearly areas. It was aimed at creating awareness and appealing to the residents to report cases of gender based abuse and also to educate them on different kinds of abuse they can encounter. Mankweng police spokesperson warrant officer Malan Nchabeleng is a source on the story following reports from SAPS Limpopo 2012, that shows that Mankweng is the second top area that has many incidence of children and women abuse. Nchabeleng on the story submitted explains causes of gender abuse and how to avoid being a victim. He explains to our listeners the importance of reporting sexual abuse, how and where to report. Nchabeleng also alluded that people do not have sufficient information about gender abuse, because he says there are still lots of people who still keep mum about gender problems occurring at home or at work.
He further said females do not report abuse because perpetrators are breadwinners and their husbands or also family members that usually resort for solving the case out of court. He says most people get abused are females since they are less physically strong and some depend on men who end up abusing them.
On the other side of the story, the public has dismally condemned abuse though Nchabeleng is concerned that the public is reluctant to hand over information about suspects of abuse or to give evidence on gender based violence cases.
I think this is a good example of gender in media content as it shows that children and women are victims of gender based violence because they are fragile. Ordinary or cultural people say men are still seen to be head of family, decision makers and people who have more rights than others. Media has played an integral part in educating them that they share same equal rights with men and that no one is above the law.
