Given that the Local Authority domain is a labour intensive organisation most Municipalities have been male dominated domains both politically and from an administrative perspective and at Gobabis this was no exception.

Over the years though with the introduction Gender equality programs both government and from individual political institutions there has been a paradigm shift in balance that has bought about a great influx of women into key decision and policy making positions within the political and administrative arena, over the last 5 years the council has comprised of 71% women and given the drive from political parties to have more representation of women within the party structures the chances are very high that this figure will grow exponentially after the next local authority elections

In line with the above this has bought about great change in the approach in which council deals with the problems affecting the communities as woman centric agendas which traditionally were not catered for have been bought to the forefront of the local authority, thus empowering and encouraging women to take a greater economic & leadership role within the community,

This change is evident in the number of registered small & medium enterprises that are currently operating within the both formal and informal markets within Gobabis and with the input and recommendations received from the community the Local economic Development and community Development offices are working tirelessly to ensure that venues and facilities are in place in order for the women of the town to make a greater impact with this regard .

With our Current Mayor Hon. Silla Bezuidenhoudt being an avid entrepreneur she has paved the way for many aspiring young and old women to actively participate in the economy of Gobabis and thus she has helped to break the glass ceiling that had previously discouraged and discriminated against gender equality
