1. Location
The city of Kitwe lies on a gentle sloping plain in the heart of the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. It comprises of the land of about 32km wide and 64km long and has about 24 formal settlement and 19 informal ones.
2. Climate and rainfall
The city receives very good rainfall because of its proximity to the equator and also enjoys 3 main seasons namely; cold dry season, hot dry seasonand hot wet season.
The city of Kitwe lies on a plateau land with soils of low nutrients and manure retention capacity. Historically, Kitwe is said to have been established in 1951 as a management board and elevated to a municipal status in 1954 afterwhich it achieved its city status in May, 1967.From this brief history, we would say the population of Kitwe has grown from what it was to the 522,092 as contained in the population census of 2010mainly due to the movement of rural areas to urban areas commonly referred to as rural-urban migration. The population of Kitwe has also grown due to the abolishment of the First President ’s ideology of ‘go back to the land, compounded by the second President ’s social economic empowernment strategy which led to the sale of houses to sitting tenants ’. This led to a lot of people who no longer were in employment to be retained in the city. The population of Kitwe is still growing steadily and is expected to even grow faster in the near future due to the growing importance which people attach to it as a centre of mining and trade activities. Most people familiar with this city know that Kitwe is the hub of the Copperbelt.
Due to the growing demand for adequate social facilities that can carter for the growing population and the need to provide social services that are of quality, the District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) was in 1995 established under cabinet circular No. 1 to help coordinate district developmental activities and also provide a framework to manage and report on developmental programmes.
Key Objectives

? To ensure that both men and women are able to access land and that Kitwe City Council follows the 30% to 70% land allocation policy to the latter (refer to launch of 2010 Barometer in Lusaka, where Vincent Mbumwe, information specialist in the Ministry of Gender, announced that the Government had enacted a policy to ensure that 30% of land is owned by women).
? To ensure that kitwe city council plays a leading role in local economic developmental activities and provide quality service to everyone regardless of their gender
