Summit 2016- Mohale’s Hoek Urban Council COE

Mohale’s   Hoek Urban is situated in the district of Mohale’s Hoek Lesotho, the place is well known as horseracing   where people from nine districts come for horseracing. The population is around 19560 and Mohale’s Hoek joined COE process 2013.Their hunger is to fight gender based violence in their district.

The council has put in place a number of gender-related policies to guide its work. The district council consist of 7 male councilors and 7 female councilors. The council aims to expand its percentage of female councilors from 50%. The Mayor, as well as the Deputy Mayor of the council are males.

The council is made up of 4 committees, two of which are chaired by woman. There are more men employed than women in their Workforce of the council.

Young people, people living with disabilities (PWD) and community members participate in community-based planning projects and meetings. Between 51 and 75 percent, women participate in public consultations.

The total workforce of the council employees consist of 38 percent women. There are no women in accounting and revenue officers. The Council do not have finance schemes that benefit women, PWD, Youth and men.

There are provisions for maternity and paternity leave. The council does have a sexual harassment policy. It provides flexi time due to if someone is ill it do not want a proof of sick leave and one can communicate by phone.

The Mohale’s Hoek Urban Council allocates a substantial budget to gender-related projects, these amounts has stood at the same level from 2015 to 2016.

As part of the of the Council’s local economic development plan, Council has a market designed to help men, women, PWD and Youth in order to improve themselves and to increase the economy of the Country. This people are divided in stalls. Everyone is given an opportunity. There are 160 beneficiaries benefiting from jobs created by the council, 121 women and 39 men.

Women, men, PWD, and youth are involved in the planning, management, and maintenance of water and sanitation. There is a total of 9 water and sanitation committees. nine of which is chaired by a woman.
