Madagascar: Mahajanga fights back the red zone

The Urban Council of Mahajanga is located in the north-western part of Madagascar. The population is estimated at 240 000 in an area of 53 km2. Mahajanga is a tourist area and is classified as a red zone in terms of HIV and AIDS prevalence.

The Urban Council of Mahajanga has budgeted R 2 900 000 (MGA 753 000 000) for the SRHR action plan. After the SRHR training, the community proceeded directly to the community sensitisation focusing on young people and reproductive health, HIV and AIDS, family planning and early pregnancy issues.

The programme was carried out in three public and private schools around the council by a team of the council staff, representatives of the health department and Population Services International (PSI) Madagascar during 16 days 2018.
