MAM – The Mouvement d’Aide Á la Maternité – was founded in December 1995 and has become a registered NGO in 1998. Since August 1997, MAM has opened The Centre for Life which has been enlarged in 2005. MAM has developed different activities during these years.
MAM has opened branches in five regions of Mauritius where dedicated volunteers regroup young women facing pregnancies and prepare them for a good delivery. MAM ’s supportive action prepares young girls to motherhood with a positive mindset. Instead of being idle during their pregnancy time, young women learn about self-care/health/hygiene/childcare, breast feeding, while preparing for delivery and welcoming baby. They must become caring mothers, behaving responsibly. The overall outcome is the well-being of women and their families. MAM also works with the teenagers in the program Pran letan pou kontan, so that they may not fall into the problems of teenage pregnancy.
