The Serengeti We Can Live without Gender Based Violence, HIV and AIDS and Female Genital Mutilation programme aims to reduce gender based violence practices which contribute to the spread of HIV and AIDS to women and girls. The project is under the Anglican Church â € “ Mara Diocese.
Through mobilising traditional leaders to prevent harmful traditional practices such as Female Genital Mutilation, early girl child marriages, inheritance of widows, etc the project succeeded in reducing FGM in some villages in Serengeti District.
ACT â € “ Diocese of Mara involves traditional leaders as key people to support the prevention of harmful traditional practices in the community. During village community forums and workshops we succeeded in learning a lot from traditional leaders, and it was a good time to exchange knowledge on the effects of FGM and early child marriages in this time of HIV and AIDS.
Traditional leaders agreed together to stop FGM and early child marriage in communities. They used village community forums, village meetings, workshops and training to educate people about the effects of FGM and other harmful traditional practices.
The chairman of traditional leaders in the area announced to the communities that there should be no FGM in this time of HIV and AIDS and everyone should stop it in our community. He promised to be the model in the village to prevent FGM. The chairman of traditional leaders did not take his daughter to undergo FGM; instead he wants her to continue with her studies. This encouraged many people in the village to stop FGM.
ACT â € “ Diocese of Mara and the district council in Serengeti are continuing to support male activists to work with women and girls in developing campaigns to challenge and change the harmful traditional practices one by one to stop gender based violence in communities.
