I am Medy Neves, Mayor of Vila da Massinga, the Municipality of Vila da Massinga is made up of five Members, of which 3 women are 2 Councilors and one President, which corresponds to 60% of gender representation. I have as a general objective: To develop actions with a view to mitigating the effects of climate change and Specific are: Build a rainwater drainage system; eliminate the accumulation of rainwater on public roads, reduce the opening of craters, by targeting rainwater, reduce the accumulation of waste in inappropriate places, through permanent collection in order to reduce infections against malaria and other diseases diarrheal.
With regard to the development of actions, related to gender and climate change, I have ended up with permanent activities aimed at reducing the effects of climate change, which is the case of the collection and treatment of solid waste, the planting of shade trees on the roads, through routine work of the employees concerned in the health area, on cleaning days, by raising the awareness of the sellers and users of the markets and the population in general, to always take environmentally friendly attitudes.
And these actions started with the work and elimination of water from the kitchens of the central market, where a drain was built, for the deposition of waste water resulting from activities carried out within the market, since they were previously deposited on the public road and at the side of the silo for depositing solid waste. Also at the level of the municipality for combating erosion and elimination of rainwater, a project was designed and implemented for the construction of access roads using pavers, integrated with a rainwater drainage system.
Talking about gender and climate change, I have worked with partners such as: PRODIA which is an organization that was responsible for implementing the project to mitigate erosion and rainwater accumulation on public roads, and ADELINO GARDEN SERVICE, which is a local company dedicated to the maintenance of parks and gardens, this company was contracted for the removal of sand accumulated by the rains on the paved and paved roads. As a representative of the Municipality of Vila da Massinga I worked with the Cities and Climate Change Project, which acquired a suction tank, which is used for the leakage of septic tanks and drains, a silo was built to deposit solid waste and trained municipal environment managers for the issue of climate change.
For the realization of this project, the support of all the staff of the municipality was necessary, because my challenge was to obtain financing for the project, given its size and complexity, the Municipality was not in time to bear the expenses, its dimension is due to the complexity of the project. The Municipality was not in time to bear the expenses, and with great effort and work, we had the possibility of being financed by PRODIA, and the Municipality bet on the Project Gender and Climate Change, since it was already its priority. In conclusion, in all meetings held by the Council, the Assembly and cooperation partners and other state institutions, I have always carried a message of the need for the involvement of all municipalities in actions for the conservation of the infrastructures erected to allow them to have long durability, such as the non-deposition of solid residues in drainage ditches and water retention basins, keeping them always clean, avoiding the erection of other infrastructures in nearby and unsuitable locations and other educational actions aimed at sustaining the municipalities.
