Many HIV prevention programmes have been conducted around the world over the last 15 years. The evidence for the effectiveness on specific s health communication and educational programmes is scarce, partly because rigorous evaluation is difficult to do, not enough has been done, and the results are often not published in peer reviewed literature. Mass media programmes, school-based programmes, and even sexually transmitted infection (STI) treatment programmes have been singled out for lacking evidence of effectiveness.
