Water is Life

Water is a basic need, so provision of water to multitudes of Kariba residents transforms their way of life especially women and children. Kariba Municipality in partnership with GIZ a Germany based organisation has managed to provide water to areas like Heights and Mica Point which were receiving erratic water supplies for over seven years in that predicament. According to the World Health Organisation standards and the Standards Association of Zimbabwe the Kariba water is 100% clean after purification. In Zimbabwe our portable water is number two to Mutare on safety. With the help of our partners we have managed to establish a laboratory for water quality testing and this is done three times a day to check on the quality of our water before and after purification. Provision of safe drinking water to our residents is the integral part of service delivery which is expected of us as a local authority. By so doing the burden is reduced from women so that they can do other productive work for their families.

In addition to service delivery, during the 16 days of activism Kariba Municipality gender committee together with its members took up the commemorations in collaboration with the Ministry of women affairs, Women Coalition, Batanai group, the Padare chapter, representatives from the Victim friendly unit and the Zimbabwe Defence forces gender unit took up to the campaigns to schools. The group that went out had only one goal to educate the school children on all gender related issues which include rape, the different forms of domestic violence, HIV and AIDS, and child abuse. This was done as a way of reaching out to the minors of the community so that they will not be caught off guard once they fall into the above mentioned adversities. Children can easily fall prey to gender related issues and they can spearhead positive change once they are equipped with knowledge.
