Liquid waste management is a serious problem in most cities. Poor management of such waste has an impact on climate change and poses a potential time bomb to disease outbreaks. Kadoma City had a problem with provision of proper public sanitation facilities and sewage used to run along the streets. The SQ and GB are serviced by communal toilets and they were the worst affected by overflowing sewage. Such a scenario poses a time bomb for serious communicable diseases like cholera.
Upon realising that it was facing challenges to improve the living standards of the GB and SQ residents, Kadoma City engaged the affected community. The community realised that the City Council on its own cannot improve their living standards and they took it upon themselves to do that which they could do on their own. A group named Batsirai was formed and registered with Kadoma City Housing Department as a Community Based Organisation [CBO]. The group organised itself and started cleaning the toilets while
the council supported them with water provisions and disinfectants. This continued for some time until the council realised that the community was doing good work. The council then resolved to contact Batsiranai group to clean the toilets and unblock all sewer lines around the SQ and GB area.
