Summit 2016 – Chitungwiza Municipality COE

The Chitungwiza Municipality is in the Harare Metropolitan of Zimbabwe.

An approved and adopted Gender Policy is in place. In consultation with other Stakeholders, Chitungwiza Municipality reviewed its Gender Action Plan on the 1st of November 2016. The council has 25 councillors. Between those, 18 are males and seven are females. The Mayor and the Deputy Mayor are both men.

The council has eight committees. Women chair only two committees within the council. There are many girls than boys in Chitungwiza Municipality. The Junior Council is a man. Junior Councillor always participate in the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund. They also assist in advocating for the realisation, advancement and protection of child rights. Educating their peers on their rights.

Between 26 and 50 percent women participate in the Council Meetings, Management Meetings, Ward Meetings, Budget Consultation Meetings, Gender Based Violence Awareness Ca200mpaign, Gender Action Plan Review, Water and Sanitation Meetings.

The council has two women in the management. Finance Department is headed by a female manager and well as Central Administration. From 2015, Chitungwiza Municipality recorded a reduction in number female Head of Departments from 4 to 2.

This council has allocated budget to support gender related projects from 2015 and 2016.

There are 1 067 flea markets and 519 market stalls. Of about 853 women were allocated flea markets and 214 were allocated flea markets. For market stalls, 515 allocate females and 104 allocated male. Although there are no companies financing women projects, Chitungwiza Women are involved in manufacturing of launch suites, chairs as well as garment making, basket weaving, to name a few.
