Gokwe is situated in the Midlands Province. Gokwe Town Council is synonymously known for being one of the fast improving towns. With a little over 24 000 inhabitants, it is one of the few local authorities who are headed by a female Town Secretary.
The council has six councillors, with five being men and only one female. The Mayor of Gokwe Town Council is a female, and the Deputy Mayor is a man.
The council has three committees. However, all those committees are chaired by men. This council does not have a Junior Council and lacks participation of young girls and boys and people living with disabilities.
The council has employed 23 women. In the council’s management, there is only one woman who serves as a Civil Technician.
The council provides for maternity leave for the period of three months. There is no direct policy the council uses in cases of sexual harassment. However, the council uses the code of conduct to handle sexual harassment cases. The council erected a rump on one of its entrances to the town house to cater for people with disabilities.
Gokwe Town Council has allocated budget to support the gender-related programmes from 2015 and 2016.
