Nyanga is located in Manicaland Province, in north-eastern Zimbabwe, close to the International border with Mozambique. This location lies immediately north of Nyanga National Park in the Eastern Highlands. Nyanga sits at an elevation of 1,679 metres, above sea level. Mount Nyangani, the highest mountain in Zimbabwe, lies about 20 kilometres, southeast of the town. Its highest peak rises to approximately 2,600 metres, above sea level. Nyanga is primarily a tourist town and is a popular tourist destination with its fishing, golf courses, mountain hikes and holiday resorts. The Mtarazi Falls, inside Nyanga National Park, is the highest waterfalls in the country.

Nyanga Rural District Council has a gender policy which guides gender activities. The council has 31 councillors (24 male and 7 female). The council has 5 committees and only 2 are chaired by women. Regards to women’s participation in council activities 76-100% of women in Nyanga participate in community dialogue meetings, budget consultation meetings, community-based training, community health clubs meetings and field days.

Nyanga RDC has a total workforce of 53 employees, of whom only 11 are women. Women constitute only 18% of management (2 out of 11 managers). Nyanga RDC has a staff development policy in place that helps to build the capacity of its employees to ensure that they also get the chance to occupy more senior positions once they become vacant. To date, council has sent nine employees on staff development and among them were an Accountant, two Accounts Clerks, Planning Officer, Civil Engineering Technician, Auditor, Housing officer, Private Secretary and EO Health. Of these three were women.

Zimbabwe by law prescribes a paid maternity leave of three months thus Nyanga provisions for it. However, there is no paternity leave. The council does not have a sexual harassment policy but cases are heard as reported through the employment code of conduct. Nyanga has disability-friendly access to the main office entrance for access to people with disability.

Nyanga Rural District Council allocates a budget to gender-related projects, between 2016 and 2017 as below:

Nyanga Rural District Council has 548 stalls designed for cottage industry, flea market stalls and green markets stalls 75% was allocated to women while the remaining 25% went to men.

There are several Finance schemes that women can access e.g. the Joint Liability Loans by Nyanga Community Development Trust – a revolving fund where each qualifying woman is given $200.00 for the year at 10% interest which is reviewed quarterly to ensure that the funds are put to intended uses.
