Drilling of boreholes is an annual project being initiated by Manyame Rural District council in each of the 21 wards in Seke District. The council adopted this project to promote male and female involvement and participation in any project or policy .Drilling of boreholes empowers women through providing water supplies at near places rather than going for long distances to fetch water for household chores .The project creates opportunities for both men and women to explore their interest efficiently and effectively hence promoting gender equity.
In African countries, men have tendencies of exploiting and oppressing women by the laws as well as the religious and cultural beliefs, empowerment enables them to make decisions and exposure to reproductive rights (health) and expanding their choices in life for the better .Availability of portable water in abundance enables economic growth and promotes self-governance.270 boreholes were drilled since the program was initiated.
The project is set out to provide potable water, promote gender equity through providing equal opportunities to both males and females in the community and to harness collective power of communities to drive economic development. It also serves to create equal opportunities for both males and females in the society through provision of clean and portable water at near and reliable places rather than going for long distances to fetch water is crucial in Seke. Therefore, drilling of boreholes gives opportunities to both men and women to carry out their activities such as farming and household chores.
The project had been hindered by a number of challenges such as financial constraints, absence of advanced and comprehensive planning, community ignorance and resistance and also lack of community participation. Lack of resources to carry out activities has been a major blow in drilling boreholes .The council is in economic turmoil following the economic meltdown in the country .Inadequate funds have slowed down the project as council has other projects to cater for therefore the budget is constrained .This has reduced the pace to which drilling of boreholes has been carried out .Therefore, the council partnered with other stakeholders such Health department, EMA and the community in raising resources to drill boreholes.
