Every year the United Nations declares the period from the 25 November, International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women, to the 10 December, International Human Rights Day, as the 16 Days of No Violence Against Women across the globe.
The Sahara desert grows by the size of New Zealand every year, engulfing what was once fertile land and reducing the variety and volume of crops that can be grown in the Sahel region of Africa. Failing rains and unpredictable weather patterns mean that even in fertile areas crops often fail.
When she was orphaned at 7 years, Margarida Tomas* quickly changed roles from a child into a “woman.’ĂÂ Following the death of her parents, she went to live with her aunt in the Mozambican capital Maputo. Her aunt Anita convinced the girl’s other relatives that she would take care for her and send her to school, as no one in their rural home 700 kilometres north of Maputo had the capacity.

The tying of red ribbons on World AIDS day this year is happening in the shadow of a frightening prospect Ăâ the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria is in financial crisis. Not only will this have significant repercussions for prevention efforts and treatment for people living with HIV (PLWHA), but also for care workers, most of whom are women. After all, less money for prevention and treatment – who is likely to pick up the slack in providing home based care? Women and girls, of course.

Healthy mind, healthy body Ăâ the two are undoubtedly linked. Yet incidents of sexual harassment and gender violence can hold back girls and women passionate about sport and fitness, either for fun and health, or as a career.

Even as African countries join the rest of the world in Durban, South Africa to evaluate the impact of climate change on livelihoods, there are concerns about the use of solar energy, rapidly gaining popularity in African countries, which was once heralded as an environmental solution to energy needs.
The church in Malawi is a respected source of information and an enforcer of a “moral code,ĂÂ so it plays a pivotal role in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV). Despite Malawi being a signatory of the 2008 SADC Protocol on Gender and Development and other gender-related protocols, the arduous task of leveling the unequal and vast field of gender issues, including GBV remains. Research shows that GBV, mainly against women, is entrenched in the country’s traditions and beliefs.
