If you take 10 minutes out of your busy day to watch this YouTube clip, it will be 10 minutes well spent. Produced by Chedza Media in 2009, this short film takes a hard look at the role of men and the church in decreasing levels of gender-based violence in South Africa. The film argues that in order to understand gender-based violence, it is necessary to understand men and why they might perpetuate abuse

Violence against women is now taking new forms and occurring in online spaces or through the use of ICTs. As more and more women go online using computers and mobile phones, many are silenced through acts of violence, sexism and censorship. In most cases women do not know what to do to protect themselves against such violations. Nor are there adequate measures adopted by telecommunications companies, internet service providers and software developers to protect users’ privacy, security and safety.

Community Media Trust (CMT), a not for profit media production company, has produced educational television in the fields of health, HIV and AIDS, education, gender-based violence and other human rights issues. CMT believes that the media plays a key role in combating GBV and promoting gender equality. CMTs work on gender can be divided into media messaging and training. Two products are the educational television series Siyayinqoba Beat It and the recent documentary A Country for My Daughter.

During the recent Gender and Media Summit and Awards held in October, one submission for video advocacy stood out and took home the award for Investigative Reporting (sustained reporting on a particular issue). This piece was titled Gender De-commissioned, and was produced by Melini Moses and Busisiwe Ntuli of South Africa. The judges said the journalists talk to real people about real issues.

WomensNet defines digital story telling as a recording and documentation method which foregrounds the voice and experiences of story tellers as primary in the process of storytelling.
