A brief description of the news story:
The ANC in Gauteng ran a door to door campaign in the West Rand and the residents complained about poor housing, poverty and unemployment. They have lost hope in the government. However the ANC has promised to end poverty in that community.

This story can be considered gender aware as the sources used represent both women and men. The news clip was introduced with the story of an elderly woman who explains how poverty has affected her in the community. As elderly women are usually erased by the media, this story shows sensitivity to both men and women. Although this story showed a good balance in terms of sources, it could have shown a better balance in terms of female politicians and voices of authority. The role of South African women in politics has increased since the end of apartheid through policy changes and organisations set to enable women’s rights – women still feel underrepresented by the political leaders in addressing poverty, and the media usually show mainly male political leaders taking part in the leadership positions.

This clip was balanced in its selection of sources in the community and told the stories of both women and men who live there. Although they could have included the voices of women in authority, this story can still be considered gender aware in its selection of sources.
