Gender-based violence is a violation of human rights’.

Twenty years ago, the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL) of Rutgers University, along with 23 participants of the first Women’s Global Institute on Women,

Violence and Human Rights, called for a global campaign of « 16 Days of Activism against Gender violence” (16 Days Campaign). Participants chose their dates, November 25, International Day for the Elimination of violence against Women, and International and Human Rights Day on December 10, to bookend the campaign to emphasize that violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights.

In broadest terns, “gender-based violence’ (GBV) is violence that is directed at an individual based on his or her biological sex, gender entity, or individual’s perceived adherence to socially-defined norms or masculinity and feminity. GBV can occur throughout lifecycle, from the prenatal phase through childhood and adolescence, the reproductive years, and old age and include female infanticide; harmful traditional practices such as early and forced marriage, ‘honor’ killings, and female genital mutilation/cutting; child sexual abuse and slavery; trafficking in persons; sexual coercion and abuse; neglect; domestic violence; and elderly abuse.

Gender-Based violenc is a global pandemic that cuts across all borders-ethnicity,race, socio-economic status, and religion. According to the United Nations, one in three women worldwide will experience GBV in their lifetime.Violence against women and girls touches Mauritius as every other nation. The 1207 cases of physical violence recorded between January and August 2011, speak for themselves and these 16 Days are sobering reminder that GBV cannot be treated as solely a women’s issue. GBV is not just an affront to human rights and dignity-it adversely impacts the welfare of our communities.
