This article makes clear mention about the trend of Zumba and aerobic dance in Mauritius. Vivid picture of women rehearsing in dance classes comes with this article which makes it fir to be a blatant stereotype.

The article reinforces the belief that minor sports accompanied with dance form are related to women. Hence zumba and aerobics are women’s sports while male sports consist of rigorous and heavy components such as weight lifting and body building. The various benefits of sports cannot be disregarded but by attributing zumba, dance and aerobics to women we are enlarging the gap between men and women’s sports.

The coach is equally interviewed in this article who is a male dancer from India. This again reinforces the traditional belief that men are coach. Though this sports is totally linked to women and that one of its many advantages is that it contributes to weight loss, it’s coach is a male. This shows the dominance of male in sports and fitness issues.

This case comes with a very strong gender bias message and encourages women to be part of these ‘feminine’ sports. While the aim is not negative in any sense, the way this sports is being portrayed is setting a very bad example for others to follow. Males should have also been included in zumba and aerobics classes as students instead of being taking the lead role in this fitness activity.
