A brief description of the news story

Soldiers patrolled in Harare while Zimbabwean citizens demonstrated over the country’s collapsing economy. Banks, schools and businesses stayed shut a day after the protests turned deadly. Three people were killed on the previous day’s unrest which the government labelled as acts of terror and at least 200 people were arrested. Zimbabweans say the president failed to live up to his pre-election promises of stimulating the economy.

Analysis

The visuals in the story are male dominated which implies a lack of participation by women in the protests. The sources are also only men and most of them speak for all of the citizens of Zimbabwe which includes women, however female voices are completely absent from the coverage. The news piece also failed to show how women have been affected by the protests and shutdown.

Conclusion

The coverage of the protests in Zimbabwe by the SABC completely erased the voices of Zimbabwean women as both protestors and citizens affected by the protests. Therefore this piece has been classified as gender blind.
