Brief description of scene:

These scenes are about the character of Moliehi indirectly insulting Gugu because of the inheritance that is due to Gugu. It involves Gugu and Moliehi and almost the whole Zikalala family.

Context
The scene links to a broader policy issue, the scene is continuing from when Gugu found out who her father was and that he left her inheritance but her stepmother used that inheritance money to start a business of her own.

Why it has been given this GEM classification:

I gave it this classification because of the name calling that is involved within the scenes as Moliehi displays her anger. There is language in this scene that denigrates women.

Title:
The topic is introduced when Moliehi tries to get hold of her daughter Thobile with no luck. I believe it is related to the storyline as it portrays anger from the character of Moliehi over the fact that Gugu wants the inheritance that is due to her from her father, which Moliehi was hoping would not happen as she has spent the money building her own company.

Focus:

No, GBV is not the main focus and it is not directly mentioned on these scenes.

People in the programming.

Both men and women speak, there is a reasonable balance as their opinions are all taken into consideration. The men speak as witnesses of the other’s behaviour and not as experts.

Language.

There is a difference in language used in relation to not only power but also the relationship between the characters as well. When talking about her children, Moliehi describes her daughter, Thobile as a spoilt brat and Skhumbuzo, her son as not being “man enough” because they associate with the person she considers as a her enemy. This is blatantly sexist language as the idea of not being “man enough” directly perpetuates ideas of toxic masculinity.

Visuals.

The character of Moliehi tries to portray herself as a victim so that she can win people over. Skhumbuzo is more of an active character as he refuses to be insulted by his mother and Gugu is active and also a victim as her emotions and also some people try to bring her down and she ends up feeling like her fight will only separate her with her newly found siblings. There are no visuals that degrade either men or women.

Angles and perspective:

Moliehi’s viewpoints are the ones which dominate as they are able to change Skhumbhuzo’s mind about Gugu and make him think she is coming after his inheritance through her demand of shares in the company that Moliehi built while using the inheritance money.

Conclusion: The scene could have made use of less offensive and sexist language and not perpetuated toxic masc.
