New York, 17 March: As part of an NGO parallel event at CSW58 on Friday, hosted by the Southern Africa Gender Protocol Alliance and Gender Links, Jan Moolman – Women’s rights programme coordinator from the Association of Progressive Communications explains how important Information Communication Technologies (ITCs) and the media are in advancing gender equality and protecting women’s rights. Unlike the MDGs, the SADC Gender and Development Protocol emphasises the role of the media in gender justice and calls on member states to ensure gender equality in and through the media. Panelists and members of the Southern Africa Gender Protocol Alliance used the session to demonstrate the holism and effectiveness of the SADC Gender and Development Protocol and how this regional instrument could be used as a model for the post 2015 global agenda.
