2 December 2011: 13.00 – 14.00 (SA Time) Gender and the workplace – Sexual harassment

Q: What do you understand sexual harassment to be? Have you ever experienced it? How would you know it was happening?

Q: Is there awareness of sexual harassment in your community/ work place? Is it something you would consider to be a problem? Is it reported when it happens? If not why not?

Q: Who should be responsible for preventing or responding to sexual harassment?

Q: What can be done to increase awareness levels of sexual harassment? What role will you play?

Brigitte Michel says:

Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination which may be unwelcome ,verbal, visual or physical. It affects the working conditions and creates a hostile environment.

Yes I have experienced sexual harassment

It was happening as I felt like not able to defend myself because I had to keep my job. I was not able to say no to some of the pressure put on me by verbal and non verbal attitudes. I had to stop the job.
No awareness in the work place as sexual harassment is not really considered as an offence in Mauritius and laws are not applied. It is a problem because we (Women) can lose our jobs when we report it and their is the shame etc. Their will always be someone to say that we have ‘looked’ for it that we were dressed in an unproper way.

The person responsible for the reporting should be the manager and the affectted person#

Awareness campaigns on the rights of women in the workplace

Empowerment of women towards harassment.
