An inspiring example of courage and determination
My training at Gender Links was very useful. My most memorable experience was when, I used a computer. It was a real opportunity! I had to put my name on a blank page. I started my training in 2013. I had the opportunity to attend all the three phases. It was very interesting. The most fascinating part was, when each person was asked to make a drawing. Questions were asked to all ladies. There was a tree. Each person wrote a little something about their life. Then, each woman glued it on the tree. It was very emotional. Even a sketch was performed. I got to meet new women. This helped me make new friends. Each time I attended this course, I was very happy. I also faced difficulties in order to attend this course. I have a grand child who was ill. He has heart problems. I used to leavee him with my daughter-in-law. It was then possible for me to attend the training. Before this training, I owned a small shop also known as a “tabagie”. The problem was that many people took things on credit. They never paid back! I still own my small shop. I sell different articles such as oil, rice and snacks. I even decided to sell coconuts. This generated more profit. Many people and tourists buy coconuts at my shop. I also sell candied fruits. It is very appreciated in my locality. This training has developed my knowledge. My business is now flourishing. I am motivated to invest more. I was not a victim of violence. However, my husband was a drunkard. He used to spend all his money in alcoholic drinks. Now, he has stopped drinking. He fell ill. There is now a positive change in my house. My husband is now helping me in managing my business. He cooperates. My children are very happy with this change. My kids encourage me to move forward in life. I believe that women should work. If a woman works, she is more independent. Many people are happy when they see my achievement. I also help other people develop their business. For example, as I am selling coconuts, I encourage my neighbour to sell tamarinds. Many women see me as an example. Long ago, it was difficult to set up a business. With new laws and policies, it has become easy for women. This training taught me that I can be independent in life. I can also believe in myself. My dream is to move forward and leave an inheritance to my children. I would like to tell all women to persevere and be strong though there are difficulties. Life is tough but we can overcome problems by our positivity.
