I am a thirty two year old woman and a mother of two boys. When I met Gender Links in 2014 I was under a lot of stress because the man who had impregnated me at a young age and promised to marry me was abusing me. I had went to the social worker with my social problems and she connected me to Gender Links and they really helped to get over the problem I was having with my boyfriend. I am grateful to the social worker for that link. I am now a confident woman who has a full understanding of what running a business is all about. I am now able to make my own decisions without worrying about pleasing anyone.
I was able to attend all the lessons as I felt they were a key to changing my life. I understood what the facilitators were teaching us. I had a problem with the cash flow as I was slow to understand but I ended up understanding it with the help of GL staff members. During phase 2 I had to balance between the training and sitting for exams as I was retaking some of the subjects I did not do well in at form 5. I had to juggle between the two and mostly depended on other participants and the facilitator to update me.
I am now an employee at the Bobirwa Sub District council and these lessons have taught me that when abused I have to seek help and not just accept life of abuse. I am not abused anymore. After the GL lessons I sat my boyfriend down and told him about what we were taught and that what he was doing was not right. He apologised to me and we have since resolved to prepare for marriage. Initially he wanted me to cohabit and did not want me staying at my own place but now he has agreed that I move to my place while we prepare to get married next year 2016. He visits me there regularly and things are looking better.
I notice a chance in me as I am now able to talk to people and give them advice especially when they are experiencing abuse. I also encourage them to seek professional help from officers like social workers. I also managed to help a young person in my community who could accept his HIV status but now he is fine and has told his family. I also work with many of the youth and help them to apply for youth grants using the information I learnt on business plans.
I have learnt about business and I have started looking at business prospects. I am saving money so that by the end of year I start operating. In 2030 I want to own my own store and having employed many of the women and youth.
