Itai Makara resides in Chiredzi Town Council’s high density suburb of Tshovani. She used to be a person who could not distinguish between right and wrong, primarily because she lacked enough knowledge and direction. She found it very difficult to be independent when it came to making important decisions. That was largely because she lacked confidence with herself. She is very grateful with the entrepreneurship training she received from Gender Links (GL). Makara had been able to get an appreciation on what it means to be an entrepreneur and to manage a business. It helped her a lot because she currently has become business minded.

The information she received from the entrepreneurship workshop added value to her business. She is able to create a budget, speak confidently with clients and run her business professionally. Her husband has steadily developed an appreciation of what she does. He used to be against women who went into business. He had a misconception that business women were promiscuous. Of course, that is not true. You can never paint all women with one brush. The GL entrepreneurship workshop has strengthened Makara to thrive in her business. She has already acquired more stuff in her small shop because she believes that she can lure a lot of customers if she has a lot of stock. She has been able to buy gadgets such as a refrigerator because of the project’s success. She currently has a bank account and her business is growing.

Makara believes that she is doing a lot to the community through sharing gender based violence information which she obtained from GL. She feels indebted to GL for fostering some entrepreneurial skills that she has used to economically empower herself with. Makara acknowledged that it was challenging to access funds to boost her business. However, she managed to get a soft loan which she had since repaid. She is using some space at her home to run her small business. She finds market from the community and she easily keeps her financial records.

After the training Makara learnt and mastered some basic computer skills. She even set up her email address, twitter, Facebook and google accounts. That assisted with her business very much as she can now correspond with her clients and other business partners. She also makes use of WhatsApp to market her products.
