To mark the 20th year of the Windhoek Declaration, the Windhoek +20 Campaign on Access to Information in Africa is convening the Pan African Conference on Access to Information (PACAI). The conference will run from 17 to 19 September 2011 in Cape Town. The objectives of this meeting include; exchanging knowledge and experience on information rights and access in Africa; to build momentum for transparency, public domain information and ICT accessibility in Africa; to initiate a process for the adoption of an instrument African Platform on Access to Information (APAI); and to contribute to the international call for the United Nations to give formal recognition of an International Day of Access to Information.
The Highway Africa Conference will run parallel with the PACAI at the same time. Highway Africa is celebrating its 15th year running under the banner African Media and the Global Sustainability Challenge. Registration is now open, click here
The PACAI and Highway Africa Conference will then come together for a joint closing session dubbed the Africa Information and Media Society where the APAI declaration will be adopted. Gender Links will be running a series of seminars on gender, media freedom and access to information prior to the conference. The discussions from these seminars will be captured in a journal that will be launched in September 2011 in Cape Town. In addition, Gender Links will soon join the Windhoek +20 campaign which is a coalition of organizations listed on the campaign website.
