The global theme for 2011 Sixteen Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign is From peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Let’s Challenge Militarism and End Violence against Women! Militarism is the belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests.
Southern Africa will link with the global theme under the banner: From peace in the home to peace in the world; end gender violence by 2015!
The primary focus of this year’s 16 Days of Activism Campaign is to promote local actions to end gender based violence (GBV). GL will be working local councils and communities that are part of the GL Centres of Excellence for Gender Mainstreaming in Local Government. GL is working with 100 councils in 10 countries including Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
GL local government facilitators will work with local councils to develop a 16 Days plan including the cyber dialogues, online discussions. The planning will be accompanied by IT training to ensure that the councils and community members will be able to participate in the cyber dialogues.
GL will work with journalists from the Media Centres of Excellence in Gender Mainstreaming. Over the next three years GL will work with 100 media houses to mainstream gender in the institution and in media content. Journalists will be required to visit the local councils to gather information and write stories before, during and after the 16 days. The stories will include local voices and issues relating to GBV. The journalists will also receive IT training.
The cyber dialogues will be run in local languages. Local councils, community members and the media will link up in each country during the thematic cyber dialogues. GL local government officers will facilitate the discussions in each country. There will be a regional dialogue in English.
